This time of year is right about the time networks make special announcements of shows that will continue through the next season. Gossip Girl, now running on its fifth year, has unfortunately stayed in the bubble each and every time and it looks like for it is at the end of its leash.
The show is reportedly going to get its final season next year, as season six should give the series enough time to provide closure for its well-loved characters. A source who is privy to the production has revealed this to the press, saying that this is most likely the direction The CW is going.
Gossip Girl, with the exception of its first and second season, hasn’t had much success with ratings, averaging only about 1.7 million viewers a week. It used to average about 2.35 million in its earlier seasons. And the storyline this year has been quite a disappointment for many of its loyal followers, particularly those who have been rooting for Blair and Chuck to get together.
If the show is renewed for one more year, a shorter season would mean 13 episodes, instead of the usual 22-24. That will give the writers enough to wrap it up and provide a proper ending for the teen show.
