Hey people!
READ BEFORE YOU VOTE.
I suppose this question is kind of over asked, blase, and generic. And I most definitely used to be on the “THE SHOW, NO ARGUMENT” bandwagon but now I’m kind of balanced. I will admit first and foremost before a commenter goes apeshit… I have only read the prequel and 5 other books from the series. I am, by no means, making assumptions as to which is better. Merely, stating my opinion and asking for yours.
The Books.
Pro’s: I prefer the books because they’re definitely more realistic. In fact, you can relate to particular characters, maybe sans the superrich part for most. In fact, you do the things they do albeit without a fabulous, anonymous blogger watching your every move.
I also prefer the Blair of the books for some reasons. Mostly, because the “preppy” thing isn’t overdone and she has legit reasons for being jealous of Serena. The Serena of the books is effortlessly gorgeous, incredibly rich, sought after everyone and basically perfect. The Girl Every Guy Wants and Every Girl Wants to be. Plus, the Blair of the books did not sleep with her boyfriend’s best friend and then give her best friend attitude for the next 3 years for sleeping with her boyfriend. But mostly, it’s the preppy thing. While I love the Blair of the shows in high school, the overdone “Prep Princess” routine, though, is kind of unrealistic. Also, Dan’s counterculture-ness is definitely more convincing in the books.
Cons: The endings ain’t always happy. Now, this isn’t exactly a con and may actually be more realistic but ah well. Some of them can be kind of heartless, for example Nate. Nate of the Books is like, Uber Jerk.
The Show
Pros: It’s fabulous in a way only visual media can be. The Mean girls are more convincing, you can actually see the gorgeous clothing as opposed to imagining it and I definitely think the Serena, Vanessa and Jenny of the Show are easier to relate to that their literary counterparts. It shows that even the meanest girls have a heart.
Cons: The meanest girls have a heart and see reason and help the weaker. Which is something that rarely, if ever, happens in real life. Blair is too preppy and sometimes bitchy for no reason. Dan isn’t as pop culture-cool as they can make him out to be despite the fact that I adore him. Just think they can make him more broody. The Mean Girls need to be around more. Rufus needs to be more eccentric. The endings have to stop being too happy.
What do you think? Books or Show? And please only vote if you’ve watched and read.
Thank you! Looking forward to reading your answers!

I read the books first, they blew me away and inspired me to watch the show. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed at first, and still am, sorta. So for me, the books.
i watched the series first so i might be a bit biased. but i found some of the books a tiny bit boring but the last book in the series was by far the best! blair is more annoying in the books she just pisses me off the ways she gets mad at people so eaisly. e.g. she got really mad at serena cos she got into yale and blair didnt at first, but it wasnt serenas fault she stuffed up her interview!’
the tv show is better and more interesting and jenny is waay better in the tv series.
but there should be an option saying they are both good but the tv series is better!
@. Haha
I do however, still think that the B of the books has a right to be mad at S bc the S of the Books is wayyyy too fab to be real. Totally perfect. You can’t blame B for getting mad!
Anyway, thanks for commenting!

Exactly. Cecily von Ziegasar forgot to give S what every character needs: FLAWS.
The books are okay…but sort of depressing actually, because the characters are all so miserable and basically doomed to this materialistic, hierarchial world. Also, in the show the characters, no matter how crazy/bitchy, still have redeeming qualities. In the books, Serena is a total drunk, Dan is this poetry-obsessed, caffiene addicted, shaky guy, Jenny is this insecure, depressed girl with a gigantic chest, Blair is a buliemic bitch (and although she can be a bitch in the show, she is definitely not completely corrupted), Nate is this strange, screwed up drug addict who is always cheating on Blair, and Chuck is basically a sex-addicted rapist (see Book 1).
@Sharon Tang- I agree. But I think the one flaw she did give the S of the Books is that no matter how gorgeous or rich or smart she is, she doesn’t have true love (Dan has Vanessa, Blair has Nate), doesn’t really know what she wants out of life. She doesn’t really want anything bc she has everything and that pisses her off.
@Camille- I agree as well. But, I think that that’s what makes it more realistic. Because people like that DO exist as opposed to everyone being rich, gorgeous AND nice on the show. I love the show but the point I’m trying to make is that the books are something you can really relate to.

I agree with you–the books definitely are more realistic, but at the same time, that makes them sometimes painful to read, hence why I prefer the show.
I agree with you, Arushi–the books definitely are more realistic, but at the same time, that makes them somtimes painful to read–hence why I prefer the show.
I like the show better because they have CHUCK in them hahaha The good version of Chuck
i read all the books.. i think they were okay, but not great as the show is.
:D
but i dont think at all they were more realistic, actually, the characters were really sterotyped, serena in the first place. i mean how can a girl b so perfect, and not even notice it?? they also describe her as very smart, but for what i read she wasnt, she never tried to reach any goal, she never did something for someone who wasnt her, she just got always caught up in situations where, without wanting it at all, she was the star, just because everyone loved her.
on the show instead she is a real person.. she was a party girl, she made mistakes, and she paid for the mistakes she made, she wasnt redeemed just because of her beauty.
kind of the same thing i could say for nate, even if i think nate’s character is not well developed in the show either.
so id go for the show, defintely
sry for the very long comment and the bad english, hope u understood what i meant
hay……..svp aples moi
I watch the show and after i read the books.
hay…………..aples moi svp……….
I watched the shows first then read the books but i love them both
they are like completely different to eachother except in some parts but isn’t that good so when you read ahead you don’t find out what’s happening in the show, would ruin it. it’s nice to have two different stories about the charaters! love it.
