I LOVE THE BOOKS SO MUCH! I adore Blair, Dan, Jenny, Nate, and Vanessa in the books! No matter what, I don't like Serena. I relate SO SO SO much to Jenny in the books because I'm really short as well (although she is 5'0" and I am 5'3.5") and I also am very...well endowed. Like Jenny, in the books, I am sweet, kind, artsy, naive, caring, and innocent. I also related so much to Blair, and fell instantly in love with her character IN THE BOOKS. Vanessa is so kick-ass in the books - she rocks! Nate is 90% the same in the books and TV show, so I actually prefer him in the TV show because he has a bigger personality. In the books, Serena is NOT a whore. She lost her virginity to Nate at age 16, and she hasn't slept with anyone since (she parties, but the sex rumors were all fake.) Blair loses her virginity to Nate when she is 18 after dating him for A YEAR AND A HALF, and she doesn't sleep with anyone else in the series!
But Chuck...oh how I love him in the TV series!!!! In the books he is bi and has a pet monkey, and is a very background character. So for that reason, I love the TV series. Chuck and Nate are better in the TV series, I think. And Lily and Rufus, too!! <3 Blair is more-or-less the same, but her personality is way overdone (and she is never cruel or blackmailing in the books.) Serena's sluttishness is WAY OVERDONE in the TV series.
JUST READ THE BOOKS PLEASE! BETTER MORALS, BETTER CHARACTERS, MORE SATIRE, MORE FUN, LOTS OF DRAMA, BUT NO HEART-BREAKING DRAMA THAT RESULTS IN DEATH OR PHYSICAL INJURY.

I watched the shows first then read the books but i love them both :D they are like completely different to eachother except in some parts but isn't that good so when you read ahead you don't find out what's happening in the show, would ruin it. it's nice to have two different stories about the charaters! love it.

i read all the books.. i think they were okay, but not great as the show is.
but i dont think at all they were more realistic, actually, the characters were really sterotyped, serena in the first place. i mean how can a girl b so perfect, and not even notice it?? they also describe her as very smart, but for what i read she wasnt, she never tried to reach any goal, she never did something for someone who wasnt her, she just got always caught up in situations where, without wanting it at all, she was the star, just because everyone loved her.
on the show instead she is a real person.. she was a party girl, she made mistakes, and she paid for the mistakes she made, she wasnt redeemed just because of her beauty.
kind of the same thing i could say for nate, even if i think nate's character is not well developed in the show either.
so id go for the show, defintely :D:D
sry for the very long comment and the bad english, hope u understood what i meant :D

I agree with you, Arushi--the books definitely are more realistic, but at the same time, that makes them somtimes painful to read--hence why I prefer the show.

@Sharon Tang- I agree. But I think the one flaw she did give the S of the Books is that no matter how gorgeous or rich or smart she is, she doesn't have true love (Dan has Vanessa, Blair has Nate), doesn't really know what she wants out of life. She doesn't really want anything bc she has everything and that pisses her off.
@Camille- I agree as well. But, I think that that's what makes it more realistic. Because people like that DO exist as opposed to everyone being rich, gorgeous AND nice on the show. I love the show but the point I'm trying to make is that the books are something you can really relate to.
